MOTU NAO NAO: A MODEL OF SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
Motu Nao Nao has achieved Benchmark Bronze status through EarthCheck, the world’s leading business advisory group specializing in sustainability and destination management for the travel and tourism industry. The protection and responsible management of environmental values and cultural assets of the destination become crucial. Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck, commended Motu Nao Nao for its significant leadership in sustainability, highlighting the company's contribution to a global network of committed tourism operators. The collaboration with EarthCheck positions Motu Nao Nao alongside other industry leaders taking meaningful steps to address tangible issues facing the planet.
ENERGY AUTONOMY
The Motu is 83 to 100% self-sufficient in electricity produced by solar energy. By producing and storing energy produced from renewable sources such as solar, we reduce dependence on fossil energy sources and thus contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
WATER SAVING & WASTE REDUCTION
The waste is sorted according to the standards of the island of Raiatea. Compost is made with the help of an “earthmaker” and a vegetable grinder. Plastic bottles are replaced by dispensers, glass bottles and water bottles made available free of charge.
Implement soil mulching to reduce moisture evaporation and minimize the need for artificial irrigation, and use flow restrictors on faucets to conserve water.
RESPONSIBLE CUISINE
Nestled on this idyllic motu, our Chef Wilfrid passionately conducts ongoing research into the property's edible tropical plants. His investigations delve into their mineral compositions and noteworthy organic molecular structures, all in pursuit of a cuisine that is not only delicious but also environmentally responsible. As both a Chef and a Chemist, he is on a mission to revolutionize Polynesian cuisine, showcasing the incredible potential of plant-based, locally sourced ingredients for a more sustainable future.
The Chef’s culinary artistry is not only imaginative but also deeply rooted in ethical practices that champion sustainability. He places a strong emphasis on utilizing locally sourced ingredients, with a particular focus on tropical plants and wildflowers that flourish in the region. This commitment to promoting local produce not only enhances the flavors of his dishes but also aligns perfectly with sustainable principles.
LOCAL & CULTURAL PROSPERITY
At the heart of our operation lies a profound human commitment to the well-being of Raiatea and Tahaa, fostering employment opportunities and promoting a strong local presence. We are dedicated to nurturing local talents, providing training in the hospitality sector, and extending opportunities for service providers across various domains, including excursions, transportation, craftsmanship, cultural associations, and more.
